Lakeview High School

I taught many classes at Lakeview High School. During my four years at LHS, I have taught Introduction to Business, Marketing, Microsoft Office, and Entrepreneurship.

The class where students write the most is Entrepreneurship. Students plan and operate business classes. In addition, students write complete business plans. These business plans are important accomplishments in writing. They document their business from fruition to future. The plans include sections on introducing the business, marketing, finance, accounting, management and operations, and sustainability. Although it is not essay writing, business plans (or plans similar to this) are the way most people write in the business world. Documenting processes and ideas in a professional, clear way is a skill students can use in their future. Almost all students will work in some sort of business setting. Even schools and universities operate like businesses. I demonstrate this by showing the students that our district has a marketing (they call her communications) person on staff. Although writing for yourself is important, our future leaders need to also write for professional purposes.

As a culminating activity, students also compete against other students around the state in a competition called Generation E Showcase. I submit their business plans three weeks before the showcase. The judges read the business plans before the students meet them. On the day of the competition, the students meet the judges who read their business plans and pitch their business. Students also field any questions the judges had about their business or business plans. This activity is a great tool to prepare students to articulate and defend their ideas. Finally, students are awarded from the following categories: Best Business Idea, Best Business Plan, and Best High School Business. Award winners receive cash scholarships. Each year, my students have swept the event and won the top $1,000 prize.
