In business I wrote training processes and materials and documented computer system, manufacturing and other business processes. This focused my writing and reading in a more technical way. I had to be precise and clear to people who would read and interpret these processes. I worked for a boss who formerly ran a printing business. He critiqued my work with a red pen and taught me a lot about writing for clarity.

I worked for a year and a half at Harley Davison as a consultant. Of that time, I spend the majority in York, Pennsylvania working on Project Keystone. This project's goal was bringing a new Softail Plant online with a new Materials Velocity Center. The MVC was the major focus on my work. I developed training for the users of a new just-in-time materials delivery software. For this task, I had to learn the system as it was being developed, clearly articulate how the software works, and develop materials and in person training for the Harley employees.

This project transformed my writing. I had to be clear, concise, and accurate. The success of the entire project depended on the training I wrote. If it was not correct, employees would not know how to use the system or they may not use it at all. The writing I created during this time was purposeful, unlike the writing I did in high school and sometimes college. I appreciated the relevance of this writing.
